BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Schein has more than 17 years of experience in intellectual property law with a focus on patent and trademark protection, licensing and litigation. Dr. Schein earned a Ph.D. in chemistry prior to attending law school. As a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Hawaii he invented a metal extraction process and an improvement on a specialized filtration device. This experience led to an interest in patent law and in helping others protect and commercialize inventions. In addition to earning a Ph.D. in chemistry, Dr. Schein attended a four year business and law program at American University in Washington, D.C., which included a full year of graduate business classes. A listing of Dr. Schein’s professional and academic credentials appears at the end of this biography.

During law school, Dr. Schein clerked for the prestigious firm of Mason, Fenwick & Lawrence, which was founded in the 1860’s and only specialized in intellectual property law. While still in law school in the spring of 1989, Dr. Schein took and passed the requisite Patent Agent’s exam. After completing law school, Dr. Schein passed the Pennsylvania bar exam and joined Mason, Fenwick & Lawrence as a Patent Attorney in its Washington, D.C. office, where he developed a successful patent and trademark practice. He assisted clients such as Bristol-Myers Squibb and several universities and technology development companies, including the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties. For example, patents on the use of the natural product TAXOL to treat cancer were written by Dr. Schein. This technology has saved many lives.

While his practice was initially focused on drafting and prosecuting patent applications on chemical and pharmaceutical inventions, it expanded to handling a wide range of technologies, such as medical devices and genetic engineering inventions, as well as assisting clients with associated trademark matters. For example, Dr. Schein wrote the patent for a popular tire inflator formulation that is safe and environmentally friendly as well as a patent on isolation of the growth hormone releasing hormone receptor.

Excited by the entrepreneurial atmosphere of California, Dr. Schein moved to California and joined the intellectual property law firm of Fulwider Patton Lee & Utecht. From 1994 to 1998, Dr. Schein served as General Counsel and Vice President for Photogenesis, Inc., a biomedical company focused on finding treatments for blinding retinal disease.

In addition to representing clients in numerous successful litigations and contested matters worldwide, Dr. Schein has negotiated a variety of technology licensing and acquisition deals that have been mutually beneficial to the parties. More than half of Dr. Schein’s legal work is for clients that he has represented continuously for more than five years.
