An investigative report by Julia Scott on MercuryNews.com suggests that Sun Microsystems co-founder Vinod Khosla may be the mysterious investor behind the LLC which in 2008 purchased and closed Martin’s Beach, a popular stretch of coastline for surfers, fisherman, sunbathers and others,
located in San Mateo, California, south of Half Moon Bay.
Displaying all the gusto of Woodward and Bernstein tracking down the mystery behind the Watergate break-in, Scott follows the people (not the money) associated with the LLC which purchased the beachfront property and concludes that their connections to Khosla suggest he may be the man behind the curtain. She also notes that the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation concluded likewise and has sent Khosla a letter requesting a meeting.
As Scott reports, Martin’s Beach and the access road to it from Highway 1 are both private and the former owner charged a small fee to let people access the property. Access to Martin’s Beach has been padlocked since the new owner(s) took control.
The California Coastal Commission is currently considering whether to challenge the beach closing by the LLC and try to restore public access.
