Types of Visas

Today’s world is more connected than ever before, and international travel has never been more accessible. Gaining entry to another country, however, typically requires approval from that nation’s government. Visas are among the most commonly used instruments for foreign nationals entering the United States, but the process of obtaining them can be very complex.

At SAC Attorneys LLP, our lawyers are proud to help clients with all types of immigration matters, including those concerning visas. With more than 50 years of combined legal experience and a diverse cultural background, our team is equipped to handle even the most difficult visa challenges.

Types of Visas

There are more than 180 different visas used by the United States government to facilitate the entry of individuals from around the world. With certain exceptions, anyone wishing to come to the U.S. for business, recreation, or any other purpose must first obtain the proper visa for his or her situation. Citizens of Japan, Korea, Canada, Australia, and most of Western Europe, among others, are usually exempt from the visa application process. The U.S. Department of State classifies visas into two primary categories:

  • Non-Immigrant Visas: Non-immigrant visas are intended for individuals who wish to visit the United States on a temporary basis. Such visas generally include those granted for school, tourism, business-related matters, religious workers, and victims of crimes or human trafficking. Non-immigrant visas may also be used by foreign military personnel stationed in the United States; and
  • Immigrant Visas: Immigrant visas are intended to mark the beginning of the immigration process and are commonly used by those wishing to start a new life in the United States or to join family members who are already living in this country. Most immigrant visas are granted with the expectation that the individual is or will be applying for permanent residence.
