The U.S. Department of State classifies visas into two primary categories:

Non-Immigrant Visas: Non-immigrant visas are intended for individuals who wish to visit the United States on a temporary basis. Such visas generally include those granted for school, tourism, business-related matters, religious workers, and victims of crimes or human trafficking. Non-immigrant visas may also be used by foreign military personnel stationed in the United States; and
Immigrant Visas: Immigrant visas are intended to mark the beginning of the immigration process and are commonly used by those wishing to start a new life in the United States or to join family members who are already living in this country. Most immigrant visas are granted with the expectation that the individual is or will be applying for permanent residence.
